Alternative Quit Smoking Methods – hypnosis, acupuncture, laser therapy, herbs, and electronic cigarettes – may work for some people, but they lack scientific evidence.
- Hypnosis uses the power of mind suggestion to reduce desire and change behavior. However, since nicotine alters brain chemistry, hypnosis may not be enough.
- Acupuncture and laser therapy are designed to stimulate the body to make chemicals called endorphins, relieve discomfort from nicotine withdrawal, and decrease nicotine cravings.
- Electronic cigarettes (also called vaping) offer a similar experience to smoking by heating a nicotine liquid instead of burning tobacco. While they contain less cancer-causing toxins than cigarettes, there is concern for a lack of quality control related to contaminants and ingredients. They also haven't been approved by the FDA for quitting smoking.
